Empowerment Pants
Recently I came across a charity that sells “Empowerment Pants”. On the pants it says, “She Needed A Hero, So That’s What She Became”.

It inspired me to write this blog about how often we look outside of ourselves for our Superhero and yet we all have the capacity to become our own Superhero through self-empowerment. The essence of self-empowerment really means taking 100% responsibility for your life.

Becoming Your Own Superhero
Taking 100% responsibility can be both scary and liberating. It's liberating because you realise that you make your own choices, live by your values and you set your own path. It’s scary because you can’t blame others for your mistakes, you must let go of being a victim and you take charge of creating your own future.

Listed below are my top ten Superhero powers that I believe will empower you and make walking your path more productive, fulfilling and sustainable.

1. Become Self-Aware
Start with recognising and acknowledging your strengths and talents. It’s so easy to forget what you are good at and instead focus on your limitations. There is always room for improvement so take time to become familiar with your thoughts, behaviours and emotions. What habits support your success and what habits sabotage your success?

2. Accept That You Always Have A Choice
I firmly believe that my life today reflects the choices I have made to date. In the past I have blamed my circumstances, parents, problems, culture, religion and upbringing when things haven’t worked out in my favour. The wiser ‘me’ accepts that I always had a choice. Yes, there were times when I chose the easy option because the alternative was too scary, uncomfortable and unfamiliar. Sometimes it’s too easy to find excuses and justify your actions. When making choices, ask yourself whether they are aligned with your goals and intentions?

3. Choose Your Inner Champion
Becoming a Superhero means having to work on your mindset. This means slaying your inner Critic and giving a louder voice to inner Champion. The challenge is that your inner Critic has probably been running riot for many years and has run the show without you knowing it, because its become part of your subconscious programming. When you become conscious of your inner Critic, you have a choice. Are you going to listen to it and let it dictate what you do and how you feel or are you going to give your inner Champion a chance to speak up? Your inner Champion will provide a different perspective, be less judgemental, less harsh and always come from a place of love, kindness and compassion.

4. Manage Your Energy And Emotions
When it comes to dealing with everyday challenges, your inner battery of energy will dictate how well you deal with whatever is in front of you. In other words, how resilient you are. Your emotional state will either renew or deplete your energy levels. Research has shown that there is a link between your emotions and your ability to think clearly, focus, make decisions and perform. Maintaining and building resilience is key and this can be done physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Get clear on what activities either renew or deplete your energy levels.

5. Prioritise Self Care
Being a Superhero means making sure your tank is always full, otherwise it’s difficult to give to others what you don’t have. Make sure you take time out to eat healthy, exercise, spend time with friends and family and get restorative sleep. Prioritising self-care really is a choice. Often not having enough time is the number one excuse. Your inner Champion would always prioritise self-care and make it non-negotiable. Start with small steps and decide today what small adjustment you could make which doesn’t take a great deal of will power or motivation. It’s so small that it’s a no brainer.

6. Step Outside Your Comfort Zone
All Superheroes ‘feel the fear and do it anyway’. Your inner Critic will always try and talk you out of doing something that is unfamiliar. The more I see my inner Critic as a subconscious programme the more I accept that I have the power to change my thoughts and therefore how I feel. If you keep thinking and feeling a certain way, over time you will create a thinking and feeling loop, which becomes automatic and subconscious. This means that you will always allow how you feel to dictate whether you do something or not. It is often said that ‘the magic is just on the other side of your comfort zone’. Start to become familiar with the emotions that keep you in your comfort zone. If you change the emotion, it will lead to a different thought which in turn will lead to a different behaviour.

7. Accept Life Is Full Of Challenges
Every Superhero faces challenges especially when it comes to fighting for good over evil. If you want to live a full life, you will be faced with many challenges. I have come to learn that continually being the victim doesn’t make you happy in the long term. Wishing that your life could be different doesn’t change your circumstances. Learning to be resourceful, keeping things in perspective and finding the positive in every challenge can help to smooth out the rocky ride. Instead of allowing adversity to drag you down, explore how it can make you stronger, smarter and better.

8. Follow Your Calling
Once you discover your purpose in life commit to your calling. It is often said that ‘if you fail to plan, you will plan to fail’. Even when you are passionate and committed to your calling you still need to take consistent action which moves you towards your goals. Having a clear plan of action, will keep you on track and help maintain your focus. There are going to be setbacks and things may not always go to plan. The key is never to give up. Which actions or outcomes are you unquestionably committed to making happen over the next 12 months?

9. Reach Out For Support
‘No man is an island’. Even Superheroes need a good support network to cheer them on. Surround yourself with people who will be willing to counsel you, give you good advice and be prepared to tell you the truth when required. Reaching out is a sign of strength and an acknowledgement that you can’t do everything on your own.

10. Be The Best Version Of Yourself
Everyday ask yourself what is the best version of who I can be today? If it is happiness, then be happy. If it is love, then be loving. If it is kindness, then be kind. Don’t forget to count your blessings. Be grateful for the little things. Laugh out loud, be humble and have fun. Most importantly focus on the journey and not the destination.

Top Tip
Love life and life will love you straight back.
